I had a dream of one day owning my own multimedia design studio
When we first moved to Florida back in 2011, Citibank had shown an interest in my UI/UX skills, made me an offer, and I was very happy to work there as a consultant for nearly 3 years. I suppose I could have stayed there indefinitely, but when they made me an offer to become a full-time employee, I politely declined. Why? Because I had a dream of one day owning my own multimedia design studio.
Long story short, at the end of 2013 going into 2014, I decided to make the dream a reality.
One night, while having dinner with my friend Bernadette, I mused about “taking the plunge” and starting my own business. Going back and forth on what a good name for the new studio might be, I wasn’t coming up with anything I liked. Bernadette was quiet for a moment, and then said “I have an idea”. With my attention raptly fixed on what she would say next, she paused for what seemed an eternity, and then uttered one, little word. “Mudflower”, B said, “you should call it Mudflower”.

Now I’ll be honest, I had zero idea of what a “mudflower’ might be, but I loved the word. Bernadette, award-winning Pilates instructor and author of a best-selling Pilates/dance fusion DVD series, told me what a mudflower was. A beautiful purple and orange flower that grows in a swamp. I loved both the dichotomy and imagery of that, and immediately signed off on it as the name of the yet-to-be-created design studio.
I started small, making a home studio in my condo, and operating like that until the summer of 2016 when I fell in love with our current space on Riberia street in the Lincolnville section of Saint Augustine.
In 2 weeks we will have been there for our first, full year. The other day we were visited by Jeannette Clark from First Coast News, who thought that doing a story on why a website design company would want to open a business in a working marina might be pretty interesting. You can watch the above video of that interview and comment down below on how you think it came out, but I love it.
So here were are, getting ready to celebrate Year One in our new studio. Need a website or graphic design? Give us a call, or just stop by for coffee.
We’re just getting started.
